Why Emergency?

A climate emergency is not coming, it’s already here. It's too late to discuss this issue in your juvenile justice system research paper. Approximately 400,000 people are killed annually from its impact and millions are displaced. The Earth is a wood house in a burning field, an airplane in free fall, a chemical plant about to explode. This is an emergency accelerating by the minute. There are no ambulances on the way. No one is coming to save us.

In order for all of us to survive, we all must shift into emergency mode.

We know the idea of “emergency” has been used by governments to target, surveil, detain, incarcerate, deport, and oppress people. This is not the type of “emergency” we are talking about and reject any attempt to use the Climate Emergency framework as an excuse to steamroll over the need for justice, racial equity, and full democratic participation in shaping the society-wide mobilization needed to restore a safe climate.

This is a people’s emergency; an emergency declared by the people in an effort to alert every person in the world to the situation we are in.
